    "AN EVENING OF APPRECIATION"
TO MARK 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF DVS
It will be an extraordinary occasion on Saturday, October 27 when we celebrate our 30th anniversary
with an Evening of Celebration at Woodwinds in Branford. The featured speaker will be
Hedda Nussbaum, the victim of especially brutal
abuse and subsequent notoriety 20 years ago.
Six "unsung" heroes who have been especially supportive of the victims of domestic
violence and our efforts to serve them and their families will be honored. They are:
- Volunteer Sharon Miller
and her co-workers at Proliance for their extraordinary generosity of time and
materials over many years. Under her coordination, they prepare large food baskets
during the holidays, throw a Christmas party for shelter and aftercare families,
and provide wonderful gifts for the children - among other contributions too numerous to count.
- Marc Ramia,
domestic violence prosecutor at the New Haven Court, has been in the position
for over five years - the longest period of any DV prosecutor. He is accessible
to and supportive of clients, while working closely with our Victim Advocates.
His devotion is further exemplified by his willing testimony to state legislators
in support of the establishment of domestic violence dockets elsewhere in the state.
- Shelley O'Brien,
a staunch advocate for elder rights, works in the Department of Social Services,
Adult Protective Services. An outstanding collaborator with DVS's direct services staff,
she also works closely with our community education coordinator in arranging seminars
on elder abuse. She has been in this position for many years and, for example,
11 years ago helped DVS get funding through the Agency on Aging to establish our elderly services program.
- Hamden High School Health Teachers Nancy DeFrank, Charlene Scarpati,
and Sharon Hale have invited our community education coordinator to present
sessions on teen dating violence to sophomores and seniors in health classes for seven years
(15 classes a semester). They participate in the classes to reinforce the material.
No other high school has made such a commitment to students or DVS.
"An Evening of Appreciation" which starts at 7 p.m., will also include live and silent auctions.
Major sponsors to date include Yale University, Milford Bank, UHY LLC, Forget-Me-Not Flower Shop and Neubert, Pepe and Monteith, P.C.
Tickets are $125/person and an additional $50 for a reception/book signing with Ms. Nussbaum.
Interested organizations and business can also advertise in the program book and individuals making
$100 contributions will be listed in the program book as "petals" (sponsorship levels are in the names of flowers).
